Celebrated Fil-Am play to be restaged in New York

"Flipzoids," a play written by Ralph Peña, is returning to the stage in New York City fifteen years after its world premiere. With a few changes.

"I'm rewriting chunks of the play to incorporate some of the lessons I've learned as a writer," Peña says. "A revisit is not granted many writers, so why not take the opportunity to make it better?"

"Flipzoids" features three Filipinos from three generations, living in the US and struggling with varying degrees and kinds of isolation as they fight to establish and/or search for identity?
personal, cultural and otherwise.

"The Filipino community embraced the play immediately, laughing riotously at seeing their own experience on stage," Peña says of the maiden staging of "Flipzoids" in 1996 that ran for 21 performances at the Theater for a New City.

For 2011, Rep to stage "Joy Luck Club" and "39 Steps"

"We've prepared an exciting selection of shows that are sure to stimulate theatergoers," said Repertory Philippines new associate artistic director Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo.

Immediate past associate artistic director Joy Virata will remain as a member of the Board of Directors. Baby Barredo remains as the artistic director.

"Menchu has been with Rep since she was a teenager and has developed into one of the finest all-around actresses in the Philippines," said Virata.

"She has also become a great director. She is a natural-born, efficient manager. But, most important of all, she is passionate about theater and her loyalty and love for Rep is unquestionable."
